Do you know where you are going? Do you want to be a Leader? These are two of the many questions you have to answer to become a Leader. First and foremost to be a Leader you have to be going somewhere.
Now this may seem to be an over simplification of what it takes to be a Leader. Of course it is an over simplification. These are just the first two questions you have to ask yourself before you can even dream of being a Leader. Do you want to be a Leader? If the answer is “Yes” then you have to be going somewhere. Are you going somewhere? If the answer is “Yes” then you have to ask yourself if you want to be a Leader.
Again, seems simple doesn’t it. I know some people who have a full head of steam, and they were going places. The thing about them is they did not want to be Leader. They know where they want to go, but they are perfectly happy being loners or doing things on their own terms. Then there are people who want to be Leaders, but they are not going anywhere. This to me is a very frustrating place to be; because you see, people who want to be Leaders but don’t know where they are going do not want to see you get where you are going.
This post is not going to answer all of the questions a Leader will have to answer. No, this post is just to state a simple fact. To be a Leader you need to be going somewhere. See if you are just running around in circles, people will notice. They may even ask you, “Where are you going?” You may or may not have answer, and the answer may or may not be true. Some people may just follow you. They may ask you “Where you are going,” or ask if you need help. Do you have an honest answer? Sooner or later, if you are just running around in circles, people will not follow you any longer. To be a Leader you need to be going somewhere.
Where am I going with all of this? Good question. I know some people who are incredibly driven, but they are not Leaders. They do not explain where they are going to the people around them. I know some people who want to be Leaders, but they really don’t have a plan worth signing up to follow. They usually spend a lot of time throwing stones at other people’s lives. If you have somewhere you are going, and can see the value of working as a team, then maybe just maybe you have want it takes to be a Leader.
Now there are many more items on the list. You have to be able to explain where you are going and why, if you want people to follow you. You may have to challenge people to step up their game to keep up with you. You may have to slow down a minute so you do not tear the team apart. You may have to teach people how they fit into where you are going, but it is all worth. Bottom line though, to be a Leader you have to be going somewhere.
Again, this post is not about all the things it takes to be a Leader. No, it is just to state the simple fact, you have to get up and do something to merit being a Leader. You can not just be running around in circles yelling “Follow me!” After a while, people will get tired of spending a lot of energy to get no where. There needs to be a plan, there needs to be a goal, and there needs to be a purpose. If people are going to follow you, they deserve to know where you are going. If you want to be a Leader, you need to be going somewhere.
First and foremost I have to thank my wife for being the inspiration for this post. A lot of things I post are things my wife and I talk about every day. We are trying to find our way to help make the world a better place, or at least make a better place out of our corner of the world. People need to Be R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader.
Now let me start with a disclaimer. A lot of people who run around saying “Be Real” are as fake as it gets. So when I say be R.E.A.L. notice I am using an acronym. Be R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader. So what is the difference? Well use this litmus test. Does the person saying “Be Real” or “For Real” have something to gain by you making a quick decision in their favor? Is the person trying to convince or pressure you into something before you can check the facts? Then they may be trying to scam you and are not R.E.A.L. Be smart enough to see past the Wingman or Wing woman who is telling you to trust the person; they could be in on the scam. Being R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader takes time, but I only have 60 Seconds to break this down for you. So, here I go.
Be R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader.
Be Reliable. Are you dependable? Are you on time? Do you do what you say you will do? Listen step one of being R.E.A.L. is being Reliable. To find out, you have to Make Plans, Set Goals, Make a Schedule and Track your Results. It is so easy to say and so hard to do. Being Reliable means you have a track record for doing want you say you will do, you have a track record for standing up for what is right, you have a track record for admitting when you are wrong and you have a track record for fixing the things when you mess up. Operative phrase here is “Track Record” don’t fall for the quick and easy pitch. This is step one of Being R.E.A.L. and not everyone qualifies. Don’t fall for the people who say “Be Real” watch people who have a proven Track Record of being Reliable.
Be R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader.
Now Be Energetic: Being reliable is step one, now you have to get active, vigorous and full of life. If you have a proven track record, then hopefully you are excited about making the world a better place! You have plans, goals, a schedule and a proven track record. Now have the energy to set your plans in motion. Now have the energy to reach your goals. Now have the energy to get ahead of schedule. Now have the energy to break your records! The world can drag you down. I get dragged down by people who talk about being real and then take advantage of you or do not show up when you need them. I am uplifted by people who are Reliable and Energetic.
Be R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader.
Be Authentic! Be true, be valid. Be what you say you are. Does this reinforce being Reliable? Yes it does. A well maintained Chevette can be a reliable car; but a well maintained Chevette is Not a Corvette. Be what you say you are; don’t make a bunch of false claims. Listen, there is a balance you have to maintain. Yes, Dream Big, and yes Be Reliable and Be Energetic; but when you are setting your goals and making you plans, set realistic goals, and then stretch them slightly. Stretch your goals enough so you have to reach for them but you can still reach them! Big Dreams need Strong Teams. Do you have the Time, People Power and Resources to reach the goals on schedule?
Be R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader.
The bottom line on being R.E.A.L is being a Leader! Take the bull by the horns, and I mean when you hear something the sounds like Bull, take it by the horns and Lead it out the door. If everyone around you is Reliable, Energetic and Authentic, you can get a lot done by just setting things into motion. If people are not who they say they are, they can train wreck everything you are trying to do. A Leader has to know how to keep things on track, a Leader needs to know how to keep everyone focused on the goals. A Leader needs to know how to include everyone who is trying to help out. And sometimes a Leader needs to know when to leave people who are disruptive or deceptive behind. Not everyone will be heading in the direction you and your team want to goal. I have never heard of a Plane heading to California stop and turn around and go To New York because One Person got on the wrong airplane. If you are Reliable, Energetic, Authentic then you understand that the Busses, Trains and Planes have to run on Schedule. Do not let people who are “Faking” it derail you. Be a Leader, help make plans, help set goals, help make the schedule and help keep things on track; but as a realize as a Leader that everyone has to pull together, everyone has to pitch in, and everyone has to do their fair share.
Be R.E.A.L. – Reliable, Energetic, Authentic and A Leader
How to go from Toddler to Titan!
We have all been there, but we all haven’t got there. We all have an Inner Titan inside of us. I think we were all destined for greatness, but some of us have lost sight of it. Here at 60 Seconds of Motivational Mojo, it is my job to get you back on track. Don’t be afraid, you can do it. Forget about the people who have told you to give up on your dreams. Follow with me on this one.
From Toddler to Titan: Crawl, Walk, Run, Fly!
Remember when you first learned how to walk? I don’t, I was pretty young at the time. But I have watched little babies. I have seen them when they are just a day old, and they are just getting used to moving and stretching and eating and sleeping. After a while they learn to roll over and use those arms and legs to crawl around. It gets them where they want to go. It doesn’t take them long to figure it out. Give a newborn six months and they will be crawling everywhere. Well we forget when we learn something new we have to learn how to crawl first. We don’t take the first six months to learn; we just want to run, before we learn to walk or even crawl. When learning something new, take a few months and get steady with it before you think you are ready to conquer the world. It is OK to have a coach or mentor guide you in the beginning; just make sure it is someone you can trust.
Crawl, Walk, Run, Fly! How to go from Toddler to Titan!
Learning to walk. OK, I told you I was pretty young when I learned how to walk, but I do remember learning to ride a bike for the first time. I had training wheels. And I got the whole bike thing down pretty quick; then my parents took the training wheels off. I fell a bunch of times, and had a few bumps and bruises, but I wanted to learn how to ride that bike. Well the same thing happens to those toddlers that I watched when they learn to walk. They hold on to someone’s hand, and then they learn to stand and take a few steps. They fall and they get back up. What happens to us when we get older? We lose the ability to get back up when we fall down. Does our ego keep us from admitting we are learning something new, and we just need to get back up? When you are learning something new, give your self a chance to learn how to crawl, and then learn how to walk. You may fall down a couple of times, but get back up and get back at it. Learn to walk, before you run!
How to go from Toddler to Titan! Crawl, Walk, Run, Fly!
It does not take a newborn baby long before they are running back and forward. Most babies are running before their second birthday. Now most of us, when we learn something new, some of us want to run before we learn how to walk even crawl. Some of us give up because we fall down a few times. And some of us, some of us take the time to learn how to run. Running is a great thing, if we take the time to learn how do it properly. For the longest time, running was the fastest way for humans to travel; then we learned how to ride horses and ride bikes and use all kinds of marvelous machines to transport us around. Still, running is still one of the easiest and cheapest forms of exercise, and every now and then; it is the only best option to get us where we need to go. Learn to run properly. Build up your endurance, don’t try to do too much too soon and then give up because you haven’t conquered the world in your first six months.
Crawl, Walk, Run, Fly! From Toddler to Titan:
OK, you have been at it for a couple of years now. Well you did not get your driver’s license until you were sixteen years old. Just because you can’t drive the car, doesn’t mean you can’t ride in it, and learn as much about it as possible though. If you want to be a race car driver, you should learn from race car drivers. Same thing goes with flying an Airplane or a Rocket ship. Learn from the people who know what they are doing. It may be hard to fly a plane or travel to the moon if you are afraid of heights. The day will come when you will have to face your fears. You want to be a Titan? You want to conquer the world? Do you think the world is going to make it easy for you? When toddlers want something they are determined. They struggle and the cry out, and they learn to point and talk and communicate what they want; but bottom line they are determined to get what they want. This is why parents have to watch their children closely. When we get older, we give up on what we want. What happened? OK, you can whine and cry, but you will only get the crumbs that way. To be a Titan, you have to face your fears and still be determined to breakthrough. You have to be determined to learn how to fly.
How to go from Toddler to Titan! Crawl, Walk, Run, Fly!
Winners who never give up dream big. Dreamers who never give up win big. And then there are the rest of us. Yes this is a slippery slope I am on. Yes this is a bitter pill to swallow. It is the bitter pill of the truth that makes us stronger. I have 60 Seconds of Motivational Mojo, I hope I don’t lose you with this one.
Winners love winning. Walking around calling everyone losers does not make you a winner. Winners never give up, never stop learning and surround themselves with people who think the same way. To quote the movie Margin Call, “Be first, be the best or cheat.” Let’s rule out the cheating part. Winners are driven to being first and being the best. Winners dream of championships, of being the biggest and being the best; winners who never give up dream big. It is seen all the time in business and in sports. And then there are the rest of us.
Dreamers love to dream. Dreamers who never give up win big. The Wright Brothers made bicycles and dreamed of making flying machines. Many people tried and failed at making flying machines. Many people tried and failed and kept trying. The Wright Brothers tried and failed and kept on trying and kept learning and of course kept dreaming. When the Wright Brothers Machine finally flew it was a victory not only for them, but for everyone who tried before them. Now we take flying in airplanes for granted. Now we want to fly to the moon. Dreamers who never give up win big. And then there are the rest of us.
The message is simple, never give up and don’t resort to cheating. See the mistake the most of make is we give up. We just accept life as we know it. We just stop learning. We don’t surround ourselves with winners and dreamers. We slowly and subtly give up. Winners who never give up dream big. Dreamers who never give up win big. And then there are the rest of us.
I want to revisit one re-occurring theme in this post. Don’t cheat. We want to believe that cheaters never win and winners never cheat. We want to believe the universe is fair and balanced. Maybe it is, maybe it is not. It is not for me to say. I can only say the sooner or later; cheaters get caught. Cheaters get found out. Cheaters have given up. Don’t give up. Cheating does not make you a winner. Cheating does not make you a dreamer.
Whenever I have been around winners, we dreamed big and sometimes we won big. Not professional sports big, but it was big for our little corner of the world. Whenever I have been around dreamers, we dreamed big and sometimes we won. I am not superstar famous, but my dreamer friends and I won a few great memories along the way. And when ever I was around people who gave up, we never dreamed and we never won.
Winners who never give up dream big. Dreamers who never give up win big. And then there are the rest of us. Don’t be like the rest of us, never give up and never cheat.
OK, here is a challenge. In the next 60 Seconds I hope I can motivate you to accept. Just get up and do it. Are you thinking about going for a walk? Just get up and do it.
Just get up and do it. Are you thinking about starting your own business? Just get up and do it. Now notice I did not say quit your job if you have a job. I did say just get up and do it. Plan your time and work your new business in your spare or extra hours. Work your new business on the side until you can make it your full-time gig.
Are you thinking about going back to school? Just get up and do it. Take a look at your time and your finances and make it work. Figure out a way to make it work, take one class at a time if that is the only way that works for you. See if you qualify for a grant or a scholarship or a work-study program. Find out what courses are being taught and read the books in your spare time. This is the information age. Almost everything you need is either on the internet or down at the bookstore or library.
Are you thinking about exercising more? Just get up and do it. Go for a walk, ride your bike, go to the gym. Grab an MP3 player or a portable radio and just get moving. Yes, you can invite someone along to go with you, but don’t wait for them. Trust me, if they want to get something done, they won’t wait for you.
Just get up and do it. You do not need a special brand of clothes or shoes; everything does not have to be perfect to get started. Trust me, everything will never be perfect, so get started anyway. Go out dancing or go fly a kite. Go bake a cake, go jump in a lake. Have some fun while you are alive, and maybe put a smile on your face. My 60 Seconds are almost up.
Just get up and do it.
Do you want your dreams to become reality? Do you want to reach the goals you have set for yourself or your organization? Do you want to be able the trust the people around you? Then remember to D.C.E. – Double Check Everything.
We live in the information age. Information moves faster than ever. So why is it that people do not take a minute to double-check things? So here again making a stand for checking the facts. So let’s break it down. Before you can D.C.E. – Double Check Everything you have to C.E. – Check Everything. Be a C.E.O. – Check Everything Officer. Now notice I did not say you have to do everything, and I did not say to micro manage everything. I said Check Everything. Just check to make sure it got done.
Now, before you can become a C.E.O. – Check Everything Officer, you have to plan, you have to study, you have to set goals. Do you have a plan? Have you sat down and set goals? You have to do these things, or else you are basically going to be changing your tune every time the wind and weather changes. How can you know that your life, or your job, or your organization is on course; if you have not plotted a course?
D.C.E. – Double Check Everything. Do you believe in Santa Claus? Well even Santa Claus made a list and checked it twice before he came to town. Shouldn’t you? Shouldn’t you find out who is naughty and who is nice before you do business with someone or count on them to deliver on their promises? I am not trying to be hard on people, but ask your friends what they would do different if they knew then what they know now. Take the time to Double Check the facts, call around, check on search engines. Success leaves clues and successful companies and successful people have track records they are proud to put on display. People who have too much to hide, or no track record at all might not be the people to trust with you life savings or your life long dreams.
I challenge everyone to keep learning and keep growing. For that to happen, we all need new information. Again we live in the information age. We have books, magazines, computers, the internet, and smart phones. We should be reading, we should be studying, we should be searching, we should be verifying. It is easier than ever to call around, and find out things before we act on the new information. Plan – Yes! Schedule – Yes, Set Goals – Yes, Check – Yes, Double Check – Yes, Yes! D.C.E. – Double Check Everything.
Now let me restate for the record. You do not have to do everything, but you should double-check to make sure things are getting done. You do not have to know everything, but you can double-check the facts to make search everything adds up. You do not have to come up with all the ideas, but double-check to make sure the ideas fit the plan and you have the right combination of people, time and resources to make the idea a reality. You don’t have to be a tyrant and you do not have to micromanage everything, but you do have to be the C.E.O. – Check Everything Officer. D.C.E. – Double Check Everything.

Thanks to my wife I was able to DJ in front of Thousands of people at a 5K Race, Fun-Run and Walk for the American Heart Association. Because of some time she spent volunteering and because we offered up our services I was able to set up some equipment on the 50 Yard Line at Ford Field in Detroit and spin my favorite tunes for thousands of people before, and after the race, and while families were enjoying the activities on the field after they completed the course.
The calm before the storm!
And the warm-ups before the masses hit the road.
How do you make the most of a day? How do make the most of your life? How does a boxer win a fight? The answer to all three is; One round at a time!
How do you make the most of a day? One round at time; break a down into a series of hours. Win each hour. Spend the first hour of your day planning the rest of your day. Attack the big problems first and the small problems will fall into place. Win each hour, one hour at time. Win your day one round, one hour at a time.
How do you make the most of your life? One day at a time. Win each day. One day at a time, no matter how hard and how long you work you can not make days move faster. Win the day. Win the day one hour at a time, one round at a time. To make the most of your life, win each day one round at a time.
Boxers train for weeks and months and fight a bunch of fights before they ever get famous. They spend their lives training to fight their battles one round at a time. Months of training goes into each round they fight. You see a boxing match is a series of three-minute rounds. Any boxer will tell you, you can not take any of those rounds for granted. As much as they want to knock out their opponent, they also do not want to get knocked out. As much as they want to land that seemingly magic knock out punch, they also do not want to make a mistake they can not recover from. One round at a time, we need to take that same approach to our every day lives.
Each day is training us for something bigger, but we still have to approach the day one round at a time, one hour at a time. You can not make time move faster. No matter how much or how little you do today, tomorrow will still be twenty-four hours long. Win each day, one hour at a time; and win your life one day at a time. Don’t get knocked out looking for the magic knock out punch. One round at a time; be prepared for each hour of each day, and be prepared for each day of your life.
